Stupid Christmas Carols - Christmas Shoes

It was almost Christmas time
There I stood in another line
Tryin' to buy that last gift or two
Not really in the Christmas mood

Standing right in front of me was
A little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

And his clothes were worn and old
He was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please
It's Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful, if mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me

He said, "Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me sir, what am I going to do
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes"

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
And I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
"Mama's gonna look so great"

I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me what Christmas is all about

I want her to look beautiful
If mama meets Jesus tonight

Lest anybody think that I'm just writing about Christmas songs that I don't like I'm going to do a post on Christmas Shoes, which is a Christmas song I happen to really like. It's one of the few songs I hear at work that I actually enjoy, and also seems to be the one song that I can't ever enjoy without somebody asking me a question while it's playing. Fortunately for me my family doesn't read my blog because they all hate this song and make fun of it every time it happens to come on the radio. Lets jump right in.

The song is mostly story telling, which doesn't lend itself too much to any type of logic fails or stupid things, as it's all narrative, the singer is just talking about what happened, what can I complain about there? Now worry not, I won't let you leave disappointed, the chorus of this song is where I'll be spending most of my time. So we have this little boy buying shoes for his dying mother, but he doesn't have enough money so he appeals to the gentleman that is in line behind him who ends up paying the balance. So what is my complaint, and why is this song getting a post? the boys mom is dying, she doesn't need new shoes, she has no use for any earthly possessions, as she will be leaving the earth soon and can't bring anything with her. Please don't misunderstand me, it's super sweet that the boy is buying something for his mom, its just not very practical or logical. The money that was spent on the shoes could have been used for something else that the father and soon would need later on, or even for paying bills related to the mothers illness and funeral.

I really like this song because it does present the true meaning of Christmas, giving, not getting, and put others first. Even though the little boys mom really had no need for new shoes his love for her drove him to go out, spend all his savings, and drop his pride and ask somebody for money to help him achieve his goal of giving his mother one last gift before she passed from this life to the next.

I'm sure everybody has already watched the movie, but on the off chance you've not, I do recommend the film, it keeps true to the song, and is a heart warming story of a little boys love for his mother.

P.S. I'm not getting paid to recommend the film to anybody, and the only compensation I might get for writing this is a spam comment or two.
