Throwing a few print calls in your mods can help make de-bugging a whole lot easier and let you know what's going on behind the scenes. You can print out variable contents to see if they are values you expect, or even just dummy strings to see what portions of code are being executed. For this to be helpful you should launch Minetest via a terminal so you can see the output in real time.
